Strengthening research technology, data science and AI for One KU

Researchers are increasingly relying on artificial intelligence, advanced analytics, secure data environments, high-performance computing and digital platforms to accelerate discovery and address complex challenges. As these capabilities become more central to research, the University of Kansas has an opportunity to build a coordinated approach to research technology and AI — one that strengthens infrastructure, services, expertise and support for researchers across One KU.

To help advance this work, we are pleased to announce the expansion of Jeff Thompson's role to senior associate vice chancellor for research technology & AI.

In this One KU role, Jeff will provide strategic leadership for initiatives related to research technology, AI-enabled research, advanced computing, research data strategy and digital research infrastructure. Reporting to Chief Research Officer Matthias Salathe, he will work closely with both Matthias and Vice Chancellor for Research Shelley Hooks — as well as partners across all KU campuses and the University of Kansas Health System — to help ensure these capabilities are developed and delivered in ways that effectively support the needs of the research community.

Jeff, who is also an associate professor of biostatistics & data science, brings extensive experience in research, data science, informatics, AI and organizational leadership. Over the past several years as associate vice chancellor for research data & analytics at KU Medical Center and joint chief research informatics officer for KUMC and the health system, he has helped lead major efforts to modernize research data infrastructure, expand cloud-based research platforms, strengthen research systems, and advance AI and analytics capabilities.

This expanded role is one part of KU's broader commitment to strengthening the research technology ecosystem that supports discovery, innovation and impact. In the months ahead, the university will advance additional initiatives to expand support for AI-enabled research, enhance research technology services, and invest in the infrastructure, expertise and capabilities needed to better support research and research administration at scale.

As we continue to develop these capabilities, engagement with faculty and staff will remain central to our approach. Input gathered through a survey this spring, along with upcoming listening sessions, will help guide future investments, services and priorities.
